27 February, 1770

On 27 February, 1770, James Cook wrote “A very hard gale at SWBW and WSW with heavy squalls attended with showers of rain and a large hollow sea”.

Joseph Banks wrote “Weather a little more moderate but no standing upon legs without the assistance of hands as yet: hope however that the heart of this long-winded gale is broke according to the sea phraze”.
